Our Department of Emergency Medicine is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of our patients, the careers of our students and residents, the safety of our community, and the health of the world through our contributions in clinical service, teaching and research. We strive to provide high-quality, efficient, and compassionate care to all our patients.
We provide care to close to 270,000 patients annually in five metro Atlanta Emergency Departments, including the region's primary Level 1 trauma center and the region’s leading adult and pediatric referral centers.
Emory University Hospital Emergency Department
- Quaternary care facility staffed exclusively by Emory School of Medicine EM faculty
- 37,000 annual visits with the highest patient acuity in the country (38% admission rate)
- Training site for Emory School of Medicine PGYIII Emergency Medicine Residents
- On-site 8-Bed Observation Unit, staffed by Emergency Medicine Faculty and Associate Providers
- Accredited by the Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC)
- Accredited by The Joint Commission with Advanced Certification for Stroke (Primary Stroke Center) and Ventricular Assist Device
- A state of the art expansion of our Emergency Department scheduled to begin at the end of 2012 will double the ED square footage, and the evidence-based design is built on patient- and family-centered care
Emory University Hospital Midtown Emergency Department
- Blended academic/community practice staffed exclusively by Emory School of Medicine EM faculty
- 59,000 annual visits with a high patient acuity (24% admission rate)
- Training site for Emory School of Medicine PGY I-III Emergency Medicine Residents
- On-site 8-Bed Observation Unit staffed by Emergency Medicine Faculty and Associate Providers
- Accredited by the Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC)
Emory Johns Creek Hospital Emergency Department
- State-of-the-art community hospital in North Fulton County staffed by EM physicians (The Emory Clinic and ESA). EM partnered with EHC and TEC to develop Emory Specialty Associates (ESA), a new community practice group, to provide staffing for this facility
- 22,000 annual visits with a 22% admission rate, 20% pediatric visits
- Accredited by The Joint Commission with Advanced Certification for Stroke (Primary Stroke Center)
- ED scored in the 99th percentile in Press Ganey Patient Satisfaction scores in 2011

Grady Memorial Hospital Emergency Care Center
- Urban Level 1 Trauma Center - primary trauma center in the region staffed exclusively by Emory School of Medicine EM faculty
- 113,000 annual visits with a 17% admission rate
- Training site for Emory Emergency Medicine residents and 155 residents of Emory and Morehouse Schools of Medicine, representing many medical disciplines
- On-site 7-Bed Observation Unit staffed by Emergency Medicine Faculty and Associate Providers
- Accredited by The Joint Commission with Advanced Certification for Stroke (Primary Stroke Center)
- New dedicated Grady Trauma Center opened in November 2011
- Additional expansion of the Grady EECC and of the Observation Unit from 7 to 20 beds are underway
Atlanta Veteran’s Administration Medical Center (VAMC) Emergency Department
- Emory Department of Emergency Medicine partnered with the Atlanta VAMC to develop a full EM staffing model for the Atlanta VAMC ED
- 37,000 annual visits with a 30% admission rate
- Training site for Emory and Morehouse Schools of Medicine Internal Medicine Residents
- Plans are underway to renovate and expand the ED, doubling the square footage, to best meet the needs of returning veterans
