It is with great pride and pleasure to announce that our own Dr. Kathy Hall-Boyer and Dr. Sheryl LeAnn Heron have been selected by the American College of Emergency Physicians as a 'Hero in Emergency Medicine'.

Dr. Kathryn L. Hall-Boyer
Dr. Kathryn L. Hall-Boyer became a certified EMT before beginning medical school with the Navy at the Uniformed Services University in 1979. She was eventually stationed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where she spent a year as medical director of the emergency department. After completing her emergency medicine residency, Dr. Hall-Boyer eventually returned to academic medicine with Emory University. In 2000, she joined the Army Reserve and has since deployed to Germany and Bosnia and spent two years at the southeast reserve headquarters. In 2007 she took command of a reserve medical training support battalion.

Dr. Hall-Boyer serves as chair of the American Association of Women Emergency Physicians section of ACEP and is an ACEP Ethics Committee Member. She has received numerous military awards, including the Meritorious Service Medal, three Army Commendation Medals, an Army Achievement Medal, a Navy Achievement Medal, and a Defense Service Medal.

Dr. Sheryl LeAnn Heron
Dr. Heron, Associate professor and associate residency director, also serves as assistant dean for medical education and student affairs, Grady Campus, has accomplished much during her tenure at Emory. As an associate residency director, she has been an instrumental player in the growth of the residency program from 16 to 18 residents per year. While chair of the National Medical Association?s Emergency Medicine Section, she has grown the membership from approximately 30 active members to more than 75 active members, as well as worked with the section to obtain fiscal support of more than $100,000.

Dr. Heron chairs the Family Violence Subcommittee on ACEP's Public Health Committee and served as co-chair of SAEM's Cultural Competency Curriculum Task Force. She has received numerous awards and honors, including the 'Women in Medicine Award' from the NMA, the 'Gender Justice Award' from the Georgia Commission on Family Violence and the 'Hope Award from the Partnership Against Domestic Violence.' She was also featured in Georgia Trend Magazine as '40 under 40' rising stars in Georgia. Kathleen O'Donnell received the award for Best Presentation of the Best Practices Tract at CORD for her poster on the "ED-Based Ortho Rotation" Curriculum on March 1, 2008.
