ACADEMIC INTERESTS : My academic interests focus on undergraduate medical education. This role entails once or twice-weekly teaching sessions, individual mentoring, as well as ongoing faculty development. I additionally serve as co-director of the required M4 clerkship in emergency medicine. I have a particular interest in novel instructive methods such as objective structured clinical exams (OSCEs). I developed an advanced-skills OSCE which we utilize in our clerkship to teach resuscitation and stabilization, data acquisition/interpretation, medical decision-making, and communication with healthcare providers, patients and families. I currently co-chair the Didactic Sessions committee of the Clerkship Directors in Emergency Medicine, and serve on the program committee of the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine.

ACADEMIC INTERESTS : I am actively involved in both the preclinical and clinical assessment of neuroprotectants as agents to enhance neuroplasticity and neurorecovery for traumatic brain injury (TBI) and stroke. My current NIH funded basic science research is examining the role of exogenous progesterone and pregnenolone in the post injury/recovery phase of TBI. However, I am particularly interested in the clinical applications of the basic science research. I was the Project Leader for the Phase II clinical trial, ProTECT™ (Progesterone for TBI, experimental clinical treatment) and am now the Principal Investigator for the planning grant proposal that is preparing for a Phase III clinical trial. I am also the Principal Investigator of the Emory Hub for the Neurological Emergencies Treatment Trials Network. I am also interested in the development of novel technologies for medical applications, particularly mild TBI, and work collaboratively with the Georgia Institute of Technology Department of Biomedical Engineering. I am the co-inventor of the DETECT™ system, (Display Enhanced Testing for Concussions and mTBI). The DETECT™ system is a novel, portable, self-contained device developed for the sideline assessment of concussion and other forms of cognitive impairment, such as MCI/early Alzheimer’s disease.
